Virginia

The novel begins in the state of Virginia, where Ava’s home is located. The Colonel’s gang arrives at Ava’s home, and the Colonel rapes and impregnates Ava. The Colonel is soon killed by soldiers. Callum and Ava soon escape together on the horse named Reiver. They are soon pursued by the Colonel’s men and Clayburn.

Georgia

Most of the novel takes place in the state of Georgia. Callum and Ava ride into Georgia and decide to ride towards the coast, as Callum has distant relations by marriage who live there. As Callum and Ava progress through their journey, they move generally move through the state’s open countryside, occasionally stopping at places for food or shelter.

Atlanta
