Summary

In Chapter 10, Ava and Callum continue to ride towards Atlanta. As they begin to approach the city’s vicinity, they detect signs of the coming winter. They soon arrive at the outskirts near Atlanta and see that many buildings have been set on fire, presumably by Union soldiers led by General William Tecumseh Sherman. Ava and Callum are shocked and disturbed by the sight. They proceed to ride through the ruined city. They have run out of food. They see a cattle calf, and Callum kills it for food. As they continue, they see railroad tracks that have been dismantled by Union soldiers. For a meal, they eat meat from the calf and drink some of the whiskey Lachlan gave them. As they continue to ride, Callum falls asleep and dreams of a dark, malevolent shadow spreading destructively across the land. The next day...
