Summary
In Chapter 4, Callum and Ava awake in the house. In the light of morning, they see that there is a corpse in the room. At Ava’s insistence, they bury the corpse in the yard. In Chapter 5, they find that the horse—along with all of their food and supplies—was stolen during the night. They continue walking south through the mountain range. Ava inquires again about Callum’s past and family. Callum says that he, his mother, and his sister were in workhouses with terrible conditions. His mother and sister died of typhus, and his father was hanged by the British after being accused of being against British rule. They walk for days, occasionally detecting signs of other people nearby. One night, they smell meat cooking on a fire somewhere in the woods. Callum goes to investigate, and he finds three men sitting...
