Importance: This quote, in which Dodge considers the myth of the River Lethe from Greek Mythology, illustrates one of the main questions which permeates the novel, which is whether or not losing one's memories would fundamentally change one's identity. As Egdod in the Bitworld, Dodge temporarily loses all of his memories of his life, and the reader is left to consider whether he is still Dodge, or if losing his memories and becoming displaced within the Bitworld has fundamentally changed his identity.
