Summary
Chapter Twenty-Nine: March 1918 starts with Walter in an abandoned French village that has become an assembly zone. Thousands of German troops are marching toward France after Russia signed a peace treaty. Walter now feels they are close to victory and thinks that German influence can improve countries like France, Italy, and Russia. However, the Americans have started to arrive and Walter knows they must win quickly. Walter is in charge of a group of storm troopers, all trained with the latest battle tactics, including his old rival, Gottfried. Across the countryside, he sees multiple self-propelled guns that he had never seen before. Walter’s father arrives, much to Walter’s surprise, and tells Walter to gather up all the men. A few hours later, the kaiser himself arrives and announces that they will be victorious.
