Summary
Chapter Twenty Two: January and February 1917, begins with Walter dreaming about being trapped in a rampaging horse-drawn carriage just after the allies rejected Germany’s peace proposal. Now Germany wants to sink every ship in the warzone and the kaiser promoted an aggressive foreign minister, Zimmermann. Walter is most worried about America as he believes the Russians are almost defeated. Otto tells Walter he can work in Berlin if he marries Monika as they arrive at Castle Pless. They all meet in a conference room with Germany’s senior military commanders and Kaiser Wilhelm. Admiral Von Holtzendorff believes that his plan will stop the allies in five months and that no Americans will enter Europe. The Kaiser signs the plan.
Afterward, General von Henscher asks Otto and Walter how to discourage the Americans. They think...
