Summary

Chapter Ten: August 1-3, 1914, begins with Maud panicking over the headlines. Fitz says that Churchill asks for a Liberal-conservative government, and Maud thinks war is more likely by the day. Fitz explains that the conservative leader turned it down, and now Liberals will be divided between war and rebellion. This will allow conservatives to take rule. Maud thinks that everyone wants war for their own sake and cries when she realizes that Fitz might be dead when his child is born.

Part II begins at the German Embassy where Walter worries about Maud in the political chaos. He is desperate to keep Britain and Germany as allies, and the ambassador agrees. Walter wants the French to declare themselves neutral and learns from another ambassador that they will stay neutral with Great Britain if Germany does not...
