Summary
Act Two begins with the same stage directions as Act One. “Lights up on a negro:/Beverly is peeling carrots, real carrots, on a theater set that looks like a nice living / dining room in a nice house in a nice neighborhood” (32). After the repeated stage directions, there is a note that the next conversation takes place while the actions of Act One are repeated. The author writes that she has included the “stage directions from Act One to give a sense of the timing that we found in [the premiere] production. But you do you” (32).
As Beverly, Dayton, and the other characters play out the actions from Act One, Suze and Jimbo play a game about which race they would be if it were possible. Suze challenges Jimbo on the very idea of the game, saying that he had said that...
