Summary
“Lights up on a negro:/Beverly is peeling carrots, real carrots, on a theater set that looks like a nice living / dining room in a nice house in a nice neighborhood” (7).
Beverly continues cutting carrots. She is interrupted by a glitch in the music she is listening to. She looks at the speaker. The glitch corrects itself. Beverly settles down, stage directions commenting that she thinks everything is going to be fine. “And then Beverly does that thing: she looks at herself in a pretend mirror hung on the fourth wall. It’s a very normal thing to have happen in a play” (8). She checks herself out and fixes her makeup.
Dayton appears, looking at Beverly appreciatively. Beverly is startled to suddenly realize he is there, and tells him he cannot just watch people without them knowing he is watching. He teases...
