Summary

Chapter 10 is “Midsummer Eve.” They have done everything necessary to protect the house on this evening. Lena announces the magical creatures are entering the yard. Grandpa accompanies Seth and Kendra to the attic. Grandpa says he has been searching for someone who might take over the Preserve some day and that Seth and Kendra have proved themselves brave and adventurous. There is a circle of “special salt” (162) around their beds, and Grandpa assures them the attic has an extra layer of protection. He says they must not open the window or door, no matter what they hear. Kendra is clearly afraid, but she is intrigued by the idea of taking over the Preserve some day.

After Grandpa is gone, Seth wants to look outside. Kendra urges him not to do that. Kendra puts in earplugs but can still hear the noise. She closes...
