Summary

As the novel opens with the chapter “A Mandatory Vacation,” Kendra and her brother Seth are on the way to visit their Grandpa and Grandma Sorenson. Though they are the parents of Kendra and Seth's father, the siblings have spent little time with them and feel they barely know them. Kendra's maternal grandparents have recently died. They specified that their children were to use their inheritance to take a cruise. Grandpa Sorenson attended the funeral for Kendra's maternal grandparents, and Kendra's mother asked him to keep Kendra and Seth. Grandpa asked if she could find someone else, but Kendra's mother was emotional and felt she had no other options. Grandpa was clearly reluctant, but agreed.
