Chapters 1-2 Summary

Kinsey Millhone is in Floral Beach, California, investigating the death of Jean Timberlake. Kinsey was hired by Royce Fowler and his daughter Ann. Royce is dying of cancer and wants to prove his son, Bailey, innocent of the murder before he dies. Seventeen years ago, Bailey pleaded guilty to the murder and was sentenced to six years in prison. However, Bailey escaped less than a year into the sentence and has been on the run until a few weeks ago. Bailey was arrested in Los Angeles in a case of mistaken identity. Bailey was let go, but a detective ran his prints anyway and discovered the warrant. Now Bailey is back in San Luis Obispo awaiting arraignment on the escape charge.
