Chapters 12-14 Summary
In chapter twelve, Lucas has coffee with Bekker and talks to him about his wife. Lucas is surprised at Bekker's lack of compassion for his wife. Bekker explains that they were estranged, they just felt a divorce was pointless. Bekker tells Lucas he has no reason to have wanted his wife dead because he inherited nothing from her except the house, a house he cares deeply for but might have to sell because of the difficulties Del has caused in his life by accusing him of murder. Lucas promises to speak both to Del and the other cops, to make them stop harassing Bekker. Bekker then asks Lucas what he thinks happens to people when they die. Lucas says nothing, they simply stop existing. Lucas then asks to see Stephanie's bedroom, which Bekker happily allows. When Lucas leaves, he sneaks up...
