Saeed
Though Saeed’s character changes over the course of the book, he is described at first as an “independent-minded, grown man, unmarried, with a decent post and a good education” (10). Saeed is also handsome and wears stubble, even into old age. Until he and his coworkers are laid off, he works for an agency specializing in outdoor advertising. When Nadia first meets him, he is lighthearted and slightly sardonic. He feels attracted to Nadia and asks her out on a coffee date. As their country is torn apart by violence and conflict, Saeed is especially protective of Nadia, bringing her necessities like matches and oil and encouraging her to move in with him. Saeed wants to marry Nadia and will not sleep with her until they are married.
