Summary
In the prologue, police officer Aaron Falk reconsidered the case. Ever since Kim Gillespie went missing, abandoning her six-week-old daughter Zoe in her stroller at Marralee’s Valley Annual Food and Wine Festival, Falk was convinced he had missed something. A technician had found Zoe and called her father Rohan, who was having dinner at a nearby restaurant. Although the community searched “the festival site” and surrounding bushland and reservoir, they had only found Kim’s “white sneaker” (3).
In Chapter 1, a year after Kim’s disappearance, Falk returned to Marralee for his friends Greg and Rita Raco’s baby’s christening. On his way, he took a turnoff Raco had shown him before. It was so “hard to spot,” he almost missed it (5).
