Milwaukee
Milwaukee is a mid-sized city in Wisconsin. The city is largely segregated between its majority-black North Side and majority-white South Side. Matthew Desmond lived in Milwaukee for three years to study the city's eviction crisis and the people it impacted. Milwaukee is a fairly typical American city and thus Desmond argues that his conclusions are likely applicable to the country as a whole.
Eviction
Eviction is the legal process of removing a tenant from a rental property for failure to pay rent, violation of a lease, or at the landlord’s discretion. Desmond states that this process has become increasingly common in the United States over the past decades. It is extremely disruptive to the lives of those affected and often leads to series of financial and social problems.
