On our wedding day, my fiancé, James, arrived at the church in a casket.

Importance: As the novel begins, Aimee quickly and succinctly lays down the foundation for the rest of the novel. Expecting to be married to James, she must instead deal with his funeral. She is absolutely devastated. However, she is even more stunned by the revelation that Lacy makes to her.

Importance: An unknown woman claiming to be Aimee’s friend introduces herself as Lucy, and tells Aimee that James is still alive. Aimee is stunned. Lacy hands Aimee a card which reveals her to be a psychic. Aimee is confused, but as time passes, comes to suspect more and more that James may still be alive.
We’d grown up together and made a promise to grow old together. I couldn’t imagine wanting anything else than the life we’d planned together.
