Isfahan, Iran
Isfahan is the town in Iran where Daniel grows up. When he is living here with his mother Sima, father Masoud, and sister Dina, life feels easy and happy. Both of his parents are doctors. They are respected in the community. The family is wealthy, owns land and a beautiful house.
However, after Daniel's mother converts from Islam to Christianity, they are compelled to give up their lives in Isfahan. Instead of giving the names of her church members to the secret police, Sima decides to flee.
Because Daniel is still young when he leaves Iran, he is afraid of losing his memories from this time in his life. Therefore, throughout the novel, he desperately tries to recount and record every memory from Isfahan. Though he tells these stories, his peers often doubt their veracity. Despite this adversity, Daniel never lets himself let go of Isfahan.
