Summary

In the story “All That You Love Will Be Carried Away,” Alfie Zimmer, a traveling salesman, stopped for the night at a Motel 6. From the place where Alfie parked his car, he could see a farmer’s house across a field. He imagined how the farmer and his family might be spending their evening.

Alfie could hear the news being broadcast in the room next to the one where he intended to die by suicide. As soon as Alfie entered the room, he knew it was the room he had dreamed about. He sat down on the bed and pulled his gun out of his briefcase. He also pulled a notebook out of his coat pocket.
