Summary
“Sunrise, Sunset” takes place in Miami, Florida and follows a married, middle-aged woman named Carole. Carole is originally from Haiti. She has a son, a daughter named Jeanne, a son-in-law named James, and a grandson named Jude. Jeanne, possibly suffering from postpartum depression, does not want to spend time with her newborn son. James’ mother, Grace, is suffering from dementia. Carole has begun to exhibit similar symptoms to Grace, and she worries that she will eventually be like Grace, who generally is unable to remember anything from her own life. Carole refuses to undergo medical tests for dementia, and her husband supports her decision.
Carole is generally intolerant of Jeanne’s current sadness, so Jeanne tries to hide and suppress it. Carole views her own children as having given her purpose in life, and she worries that Jeanne will miss...
