Summary
In the story “Dosas,” Elsie is a Haitian woman living in Miami, Florida. She works as a caretaker for sick and elderly people. She is currently tasked with taking care of a renal-failure patient named Gaspard. One day, while at Gaspard’s house, Elsie receives a phone call from her ex-husband Blaise. Blaise says that his girlfriend Olivia recently returned to Haiti and that she has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom. Blaise goes on to say that the kidnappers are demanding $50,000 for Olivia’s safe return. Elsie knew Olivia personally. They first met at a refresher course for home attendants, as Olivia had the same job as Elsie. Blaise calls again and says that the kidnappers have threatened to harm Olivia.
