The Serpents
The serpents that live in Lucia's mind represent the divisions in her personality and identity. Lucia believes the serpents have power over her, often dictate her decisions by connecting her with a reality outside her physical and definite surroundings. When the serpents’ voices appear on the page, they threaten Lucia's stability and pull her into an alternate psychic realm. Their twinned nature suggests Lucia's twinned interior selves, her multiple versions of personhood and thinking.
Esperanza
Esperanza represents hope and the possibility for renewal. Her uninhibited spirit and lightness of being grant each of those closest to her to believe in themselves, in the potential for a life beyond trauma and turmoil. Her innocence and grace allow Miranda, Lucia, and Manny alike to connect with their freest selves, and to achieve redemption.
