Summary

Greta reads letters from Hans, Christoph, and Simon. Katharina pays attention to nothing but Simon's notes about her cow and her garden. Simon then makes a trip to Heumaden to write down more of Katharina's thoughts. Katharina attends services at the church of Pastor Jungel who feels the world is in “decline,” filled with ill omens such as comets. Katharina falls asleep until communion, then gets a ride back to Greta's on a hay cart. Katharina sets up a place downstairs with the animals so she can eat and spin well out of Pastor Binder's way. Greta joins her one day with soup and Katharina notes her bright disposition. Greta believes she inherited it from Katharina. Pastor Binder interrupts. He says Katharina should not fear the trial.
