Summary
In the next section, Simon describes the day Christoph arrives with news that Katharina is being arrested. Simon notes Christoph has only one glove and has no tobacco in his pipe. He asks if Simon will go with him to make a statement of Katharina's “good character.” Simon is reluctant and says it would be better to “lie low,” though he insists he is not turning against Katharina. Christoph says he has work to do, but those against Katharina have made their accusations into a full-time job. He also wonders if they are against Katharina because her children have done well for themselves. Simon admits to himself that he is worried these people will now come after him. Simon recounts that he brought suspicion down on himself by befriending a monk when he was young. His father helped him escape the dangerous rumors...
