Physical Contact
Physical contact in the novel symbolizes intimacy and caring. As Richard loses control of his limbs, though especially his hands and arms, he becomes unable to care for his bodily needs, nor for the ways that emotional needs intersect with bodily contact. When he realizes that once he loses his left arm, he will never hug someone again, the loss feels almost greater than the loss of his music: Kathy DeVillo, his ALS nurse, provides that last hug in a moment of startling intimacy for Richard, who is still determinedly independent. Bill similarly understands Richard’s need for touch and massages his head in the shower.
