Summary

This new section begins as Trudel and her husband Karl Hergesell are living in Erkner, a suburb of Berlin. One day they travel into the city to attend to various matters and separate when they get off the train. Trudel enters a building and recognizes the man in front of her on the stairs as Otto Quangel. She watches him lay a card down on a window sill and turn to leave. She reads the card and quickly follows him back into the street and warns him of the dangerous thing he is doing. He says not to concern herself over him, to not tell her husband and to quickly lay the card down again. She continues on with her business and then returns to the train station to wait for Karl.
