Summary
As this section begins, Hetty and Enno are living together in her home. Enno has not left the house for fear that the Gestapo may be watching the place, so he tries to occupy himself with activity during the day. He begins to help out in the shop and although not a hard worker, he is helpful. One day, Hetty plans to go to another section of the city to buy some supplies for the business and asks Enno to watch the shop, to which he readily agrees. However, he instead closes the shop and goes out to place a bet on a horse race, using money from Hetty's cash register. When Hetty returns she is devastated that Enno has broken her trust and decides to throw him out in two days' time. He begs and cries for her to reconsider, but...
