Summary

This new section begins with the actor Max Harteisen, a favorite of Minister Joseph Goebbels who once treated the actor almost like a mistress. Harteisen, however made the mistake of contradicting Goebbels over a small point concerning a film and quickly fell from favor. He now finds himself out of work and begging his lawyer to do something to plead his case against the Minister's actions. After leaving the lawyer's office, Max discovers a postcard lying on the stairwell windowsill, the first one dropped by Otto Quangel. He is instantly filled with fear and unsure what to do next. He is afraid to put it down again in case someone sees him and also is afraid to take it with him. He returns to his lawyer's office and discusses the matter with him. Both are unsure of what to do with card...
