The Pali
One of the primary settings of the short story "Every Drop Is a Man's Nightmare." The Pali is a strip of road just outside of Honolulu, about which there are many fables and legends. In "Every Drop Is a Man's Nightmare," Sadie and her family drive over the Pali after attending her stepfather's family's gathering. Because one is not supposed to carry pork with one on this road, Sadie later fears that the leftover pork in their car led them to hit the wild hog in the road. Because her parents do not panic over the incident, Sadie ignores it, too. Years later, however, she cannot help obsessing over her childhood drive through the Pali, convinced there is some correlation between this night and her lifelong misfortune.
