Sadie

Sadie is the main character of the short story “Every Drop Is a Man’s Nightmare.” At the start of the story, Sadie is 12 years old. After an event with her stepfather Lopaka’s family, Sadie and her family drive home over the Pali with a container of leftover pork in their car (4). Having “just gotten her period for the first time,” Sadie sits in the back, uncomfortable, as she has bled all over the seat (4). Then her stepfather hits a wild hog with the car. Sadie knows this could be bad luck from all of the “cautionary tales about the Pali” she has heard, but decides not to panic, as her parents stay calm (7). Years later, however, Sadie starts to wonder if her parents took the situation too lightly. Years of irregular, heavy periods and her odd pregnancy particularly convince her that she is suffering from misfortune...
