Summary
Part One
In Chapter 1, the elderly McPheron brothers, Harold and Raymond of Holt, Colorado, return from the barn to their house where nineteen year-old Victoria Roubideaux is feeding her young daughter, Katie. Victoria and her daughter will be leaving for Fort Collins for college the following day. Katie gets along well with Harold and Raymond, and always eats for them, prompting Victoria to wonder what she will do without the McPherons. Victoria tears up, saying she will miss them. They reassure her she will always be welcome back, and that they will always be there for her. Both brothers drive Katie to college. Moving into college, the girl overseeing move-in day asks Victoria who the men are in relation to her. Victoria tells the girl they were the men who saved her.
