Lucha
Lucha is the main character in both "The Musical Vanity Boxes" and "Sometimes in Summer." In "The Musical Vanity Boxes," Lucha is a young girl living in El Paso with her family. She spends the majority of her time playing with her friend Hope. After Sammy and Jake ask the girls to help them sell name cards, the girls begin spending their afternoons distributing the cards around town. While Hope's familial situation is more violent and tumultuous, Lucha's is peaceful. In the evenings, she spends time with her grandmother, Mamie, listening to her read Bible verses and drinking hot cocoa. Lucha's character is also more reserved than Hope's. While Hope has a temper, Lucha largely follows what her friend does, and what she wants.
