Summary
In "The Musical Vanity Boxes," neighborhood boys Jake and Sammy invited Hope and Lucha to join their plan. They wanted the girls to sell cards for them, promising to split the profits. Each of the cards was printed with "a tinted picture of a Musical Vanity Box" (3). Next to the image was a closed seal, and under the seal a three-letter name. After all of the names were sold, the buyers would open the seals. The person who had chosen the name printed under the seal would win the Vanity Box (4).
The girls agreed. Everyone in the neighborhood thought they were adorable. In the evenings, the girls returned to their homes. Lucha listened to her grandmother read Bible verses.
