Summary
In Chapter 14, Cowney continues to go home for the weekend only because he does not trust Bud to take her to church and keep her in firewood. When he feels that situation is resolved, he decides to spend weekends in Asheville instead. He admits to being torn because each place “held something for me that the other did not” (96). Essie sometimes corrects Cowney but also encourages him to be himself. He revels in the fact that she has a nickname for him, even though the nickname is “Cowpie.” When Cowney returns to the resort one Sunday, he rushes to meet Essie but Solomon intercepts him. Solomon's eyes are red, and he makes a rude comment about “that squaw” Essie. Cowney shoves Solomon down the steps just as Peter Franks walks by. Peter asks if there is a problem but both Solomon and Cowney...
