Summary
Part 2 is titled Stains and opens with a quote from Carl Jung. In Chapter 12, Cowney and Essie spend most evenings together in Room 447. One day, Lee gives Cowney a camera he has been working on, and asks him to try it out. On his way to the room, Cowney takes a photo of several girls playing. Cowney arrives at the room that evening to find Essie dancing, and he snaps a picture. The flash startles Essie. She reveals she loves ballet and wants to live in New York where there are so many cultural activities. Cowney feels the same about his time with Essie in this room as Essie does about her dream of living in New York.
