Summary
In Chapter 8, Lee sends Cowney to erect more warning signs at the edge of the property. While digging a hole, Cowney discovers a bone. He has seen lots of bones while hunting or just lying in the woods. Cowney pauses to talk about his options if he remains in Cherokee, which include farming or getting a job “working for a white man” (59). While no one actually starves because members of the community watch out for each other, Cowney knows he would hunger in a different way. Cowney wraps the bone in a red bandana. He has books from college he believes might help him identify it.
