Summary
In Chapter 4, Cowney is nervous after picking up Essie. Cowney knows Essie and has always been in awe of her. She thanks him for the ride and sits in silence. Cowney knows Essie is working to save money for college. Cowney decides to start talking and says he heard the resort is built on ancient Cherokee grave sites. Essie's response makes Cowney feel inferior, and he wonders if she is deliberately mean. Cowney tries to make it seem he has more information, and says he heard there are high-ranking Nazi officials living there, and that they are referred to as “guests” rather than “prisoners.” Essie makes it clear she does not believe most of it, but then says she should have all the information she can before she begins working there.
