Some time later, Grog has recovered substantially, Stefan and Cesar have been placed in a permanent coma, and another human/chimp transplant pair has died. Grog has leaked news of these failures to the press, and a news conference has been called. Eva is to speak, and Grog tells her to prepare to address the question of whether the chimps are being abused. Narration then flashes back to events in The Reserve over the winter. Tatters has asserted his dominance over the sub-group, and Sniff has behaved even more intelligently, indicating to Eva both his curiosity about her and his willingness to take care of her.
