I have always been severely put off by any story which had as its main character a writer.

Importance: Monk's introduction at the start of the novel establishes his flaws as a character and a narrator. Although Monk admits that he is a writer, he attempts to temper this identification by identifying as a series of other things too. Therefore, Monk is attached to his artistic pursuits, yet continues to doubt who he is as an artist. He does not always believe in his work, and therefore does not always believe in himself. This quote thus suggests that Monk is an unreliable narrator because he does not trust himself.
