Summary

The narration returns to Wilson in the present, and to present-tense, second-person narration. “Enter the coffin” (155). Wilson looks down at the coffin, which the narration describes as being made of a dark, heavy Namibian wood called Leadwood. Wilson sees the resemblance in color between the wood and his SUV, and then he opens the coffin’s lid, noticing the smell of rosemary and camphor which he is familiar with because of a high school science experiment involving the killing of cockroaches with camphor. He looks down at the body, sees that it is indeed Greg Tampico, and notes that the eyes have been covered. He is particularly glad about this, since it is Tampico’s blue eyes that he remembers most vividly, eyes that the narration describes with the same word – “bulbous” (156) – as it had previously used to describe the eyes of Richard...
