Summary
Grace writes to Thomas. She does not forgive him and does not think she ever will. However, she wants him to know that she visited Foulis Street when she “took back the clothes” she mended (315). She describes her time there, convinced Maria’s ghost was with her. She also did some research, and discovered there were three women with the initials C. S. living “at Foulis Street in 1891 . . . two years after Maria disappeared” (316).
Grace mails the letter with the census records to Thomas before boarding the train home. On the way, she notices an attractive man. She is shocked when she watches the man ignore the conductor and overhears him admit that he boarded without a ticket. She wonders at the possibility of “knowing what is good, and simply choosing not to do it” (321).
Thomas meets with Nick at the office...
