Summary

In Part III, “2017, The Law of Harmonies,” the woman who used to squat at Lowlands leaves the asylum and visits Thomas at his office. Thomas is shocked to see her again, but excited that she wants to talk about the Lowlands mystery. She hands him a letter from Maria sent to her friend C “three days after [Maria’s] diary ended” (267). The letter suggests that Maria finally found the thing she had been looking for to give her life meaning. Afterward, the woman leaves Thomas’s office and throws herself in front of a train.

Grace hears sirens while walking through town. She moved back to Aldleigh and rejoined Bethesda. She now lives above the local bar, the Jackdaw and Crow, and sews for a living. Grace does not know if she is happy as she still resents Thomas, has not...
