Chapters 41-44 Summary
In Chapter 41, de Soya is released from his near house arrest, and discovers that the Archbishop he had removed on Mare Infinitus had powerful friends and is partially responsible for this inquisition. De Soya tours the Vatican on his way to meet with the Secretariat. Throughout the Vatican, de Soya and the Secretariat pause to view and discuss the paintings and decorations of the Vatican. The Secretariat, Cardinal Lourdusamy, assures de Soya that his reputation has been restored and he is exonerated. Lourdusamy admits that the Vatican knows the Archbishop Melandriano is a thief, and has known for a while. The Bishop will be punished, but Lourdusamy is unconcerned with that. He wants de Soya to continue his mission, and he wants de Soya to understand why this mission is so important.
