The Map
Byx’s childhood map is a symbol of hope throughout the entirety of the novel. Every time it is brought out, with the exception of the moment when she is forced to share it with the Murdano, the map fuels Byx and the group’s desire to continue on their journey. This is because the map gives them a destination. It gives them all a purpose. Something to work toward, especially after they are forced to flee Costa di Schola where they were supposed to be safe. Ultimately, the map leads them to the living islands, giving them even more of an incentive to continue forward into the next book.
