Point of View
Endling: The Last is told in the first-person perspective through the eyes of Byx. This creates a personal feeling to the story as the reader only knows what Byx is thinking. Most importantly, this shows the reader Byx’s depression as she frequently wishes that she had died with the rest of her family and hates the idea that she is the last of her kind. The reader also gets to see Byx’s compassion for others. At the very beginning of the novel when she sees Tobble in the boat, she thinks, “I didn’t wish his death. (Truth be told, I was a feeble and softhearted hunter. In fact, I’d never actually killed anything, except a few bugs.)
