Summary
In Chapter One: Endling, the narrator (later revealed to be Byx) explains that she is the runt of her family and told she has many failings. People think she is too young, too small, too clumsy, and too curious. Byx says that her species, the dairnes are almost extinct and hiding in small packs from a dangerous predator, the humans. They are often mistaken for dogs, but Byx says dairnes can walk on two legs, speak, and are more intelligent. She mentions many other species that have become extinct and Byx herself does not want to be an endling: the last one to survive.
In Chapter Two: A Visit From Some Butterbats Byx sneaks out from their makeshift shelter and describes the various races of the worlds, including humans. She says...
