Fenella “Ellie” Guteman

Fenella “Ellie” Guteman is one of the main characters of this novel. She is a vulnerable rich girl who allows herself to be influenced by Greta. Ellie appears to believe that Greta has Ellie’s best interests in mind when she encourages her to meet Mike, buy Gypsy’s Acre and then marry him without her family’s knowledge. Ellie represents goodness. She is one of the people who are referred to as being “born to sweet delight” (132) like the song she sings.

Even though both Mike and Greta believe that Ellie does not know what they have planned for her, there are suggestions that she is aware they may not have her best interests as their top priority. For instance, at one point she says to Mike that he is looking at her as if he really loved her. This indicates she might have some...
