Summary

When she returned from her second trip east, the lover told the narrator "everything had changed" (141). He was seeing someone new. She feared what came next.

She became ungrounded from reality. She could not sleep or eat. She smoked incessantly. She became ill often. Nothing had meaning. She told herself he would come back to her. She did not understand who she was if "he had forgotten" her (144).

She started driving around in search of him. One night, she drove to his house in the rain. The interior of his house was obscured in the dark. She snuck "up to the balcony" (147). She saw a woman reading on the bed. She saw him. At home, she realized that the rain had allowed her to do what she had done.

She tried distracting herself with work. Translating sometimes helped.
