Summary
It was June the last time the narrator saw her lover. She had not known “it would be the last" time (3). She was sitting on the porch with a friend, watching him move his things out of her garage. She can remember his appearance, but many other details of the day are blurry.
A year later, he sent her a French poem. "There was no letter," but he addressed it to her, and signed it with his name (4). She responded to the poem in the form of a story. She sent it to his new address, which changed often.
A year after that, while visiting the desert, the narrator decided "to look for him at his last address" (5). When she finally found it, the building looked different from her imagination. The imagined version felt more real. She had also imagined seeing him exiting...
