Summary
In “The Faraway Gift,” Engle receives a letter containing a picture of the colt.
In “Until Next Summer,” Engle describes the colt as being mysterious, like boys are beginning to be even though she is only nine.
In “Out of Reach,” relations between the United States and Cuba break down. Engle’s father tells her that they will not be able to travel to Cuba next summer. She indicates that Mami turns into Mom, with her home country as remote as “the moon / or Mars” (124).
In “Some Things Should Never Change,” Engle notes that her father has not changed. He still paints Don Quixote.
